Manchester City, reigning EFL Cup champions, have announced their plans to release a non-fungible token (NFT) collection to commemorate the title win.

The English Premier League’s Manchester City club has joined the NFT craze with help from Riyad Mahrez and Sir Kenny Dalglish. Manchester City is coming off a historic fourth EFL Cup win in as many years, plus, a Premier League win, and has chosen to commemorate the feat with a collection of NFTs.

The “1” collection is comprised of a series of digital art pieces that will launch on MakersPlace. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the City in the Community charity. Mahrez and Dalglish, along with the club, have also teamed up with NEM Group to create the collection, with Dalglish saying:

“NFTs give fans the chance to collect unique moments from the careers of their favourite players and provide athletes with a whole new way to reward their most devoted supporters.”

Powered by the NEM blockchain

The pair of players are not only teaming up for this project, but are also working with NEM Group separately to create their own digital memorabilia NFTs. The collections will feature digital art that commemorates moments in the two players’ careers and will be powered by the NEM blockchain.

The announcement comes in the wake of NEM’s Symbol launch, a platform for custom security token management and trading. The Symbol platform is a next-generation enterprise-grade blockchain that had been in development for the past four years, until its launch in March.

The network uses a proof-of-stake consensus mechanism and enables the creation of specialized digital assets. Each has configurable properties that can act as security tokens. The platform is from the same team that created NEM NIS1 and is an advanced evolution of the NEM blockchain.

NFTs in sports gaining traction

Dalglish is reportedly the most successful and beloved player in Liverpool’s storied history. He earned such honors by winning the Euro Cup twice as a player and once as a manager in 1985. The legend also won Manager of the Year honors three times in his coaching career.

Joining him is Algerian superstar and current player Mahrez. Mahrez was named “African Footballer of the Year” in 2016 and was a clutch member of the EFL Cup winners in 2020/2021, scoring a trio of goals in the semi-final match vs Paris-Sait Germain.

The announcements by both the team and its players come in a time where sports and NFTs are gaining a lot of traction together. Especially in the world of soccer. Across the pond, Major League Soccer is also jumping into the NFT world for the first time. Four artists representing the Portland Timbers, LA Galaxy, Seattle Sounders, and Atlanta United will each create art to be auctioned on Bitski.
